Upcoming Events

From Watson's Tin Box:

Watson's Tin Box is pleased to announce our third annual "A Scintillation of Scions." Our last two events have been quite successful, averaging 60 attendees for a day of Sherlockian camaraderie, scholarship, and diversion. We've had attendees from the entire Mid-Atlantic area, as well as Florida, Vermont, Michigan and Ohio. Our traditional English afternoon tea has been one of the highlights of the day's offerings, allowing us time to get to know people from other scions and societies in the spirit of our "Sherlockian family reunion."

This year's Scintillation will be on Saturday, August 28, from 1 pm to 6 pm, at Claret Hall in Clarksville, Maryland. To see the facility go to: http://riverhill.columbiavillages.org/gallery/gallery.html In addition to the tea, of course, there will be presentations and performances throughout the day. While we enjoy presentations from seasoned Sherlockian presenters we aim to offer opportunities to new presenters as well. Part of the purpose of this email is to ask you to encourage your members to not only attend the Scintillation, but to consider presenting a paper or diversion themselves. We have a few slots still open, but requests are coming in from people who would like to be a part of the program. Before the event program is full I'm hoping to have someone from your group as one of the presenters. We have decided not to have a particular theme for the papers (other than Holmes, etc.) in order to allow for a greater variety of scholarship. By way of diversions we have had skits and musical numbers all with a Sherlockian/Watsonian/Doylean focus.

For the first time this year's event will offer something for everyone all weekend. Starting on Friday, August 27, we will have Steve Doyle talking about his new book, Sherlock Holmes for Dummies, at Howard County Library, where books will be available for purchase and signing by Steve. Sunday will be a particular treat for those staying over or who can make the trip back in. Many of you are aware of the legacy of Paul Churchill which was entrusted to Watson's Tin Box by Paul's family after his passing. Paul's Evidence Boxes are legendary. For a very limited number of people we will be allowing a chance to view some of the Evidence Boxes for a small fee. The amount collected will go toward maintaining the boxes and our ongoing project to catalog the contents and make pictures available to all on our web site. We will have more details on that forthcoming.

And lastly, we will have a dealer's room for Saturday's Scintillation. Tables will be available to rent for those who have collectibles or hand-crafted Sherlockian items. This would include books, used and new. Gasogene Press will be there again this year as well. We'll get information out soon about how to rent a table in the dealer's room.

Please pass on to your members that the Scintillation is on Facebook at:http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/A-Scintillation-of-Scions/266787909052?ref=ts and there will be updates on the Tin Box web site at: www.watsonstinbox.org. Registration details as well as more information on the event itself will be available at both locations shortly.

PBS reinventing "Sherlock Holmes" by James Hibberd

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The BBC and PBS are developing a remake of "Upstairs Downstairs," as well as a contemporary update of "Sherlock Holmes."

The original "Upstairs Downstairs," revolving around the servants and masters in a 1936 London home, won seven Emmys during its run on "Masterpiece Theater" in the 1970s. The remake, set in the same period, will air in 2011.

"Sherlock," coming on the heels of Guy Ritchie's hit feature, will present a 21st century spin on the classic detective stories. Benedict Cumberbatch ("Atonement,") will play Holmes, and Martin Freeman (the Jim equivalent on the U.K.'s "The Office") Dr. Watson.

Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper is coming to Xbox 360 on April 20th.
